ONLY YOU: New Mirror Paintings

Casterline|Goodman Gallery presents ONLY YOU: New Mirror Paintings, an exhibition of works by Carlos Rolón/Dzine, on view from July 31 to September 15, 2015. A PreviewCrush kick-off event will be held in collaboration with the Aspen Art Museum on Thursday, July 30st, 2015 from 5-7pm.

Carlos Rolón/Dzine was born in 1970 in Chicago, IL to a Puerto-Rican family. His multi-cultural upbringing later influenced his own artistic practice. Rolón studied at Columbia College Chicago with a focus in painting and drawing. In 2006, he received the Joan Mitchell Award for Painting and Sculpture.  In 2007, Rolón represented Ukraine in the 52nd Venice Biennale. Recent commissions include Rolls Royce Motor Cars as a part of the company’s innovative arts initiative and the Lincoln Center Vera List Art Project.

Rolón’s work reflects a sense of luxury and sophistication. He illuminates how masculinity can become delicate, how the baroque can be minimal. Rolón’s work often addresses his own biography by melding memory and the imaginary with carefully crafted, hybrid works that are playfully situated between the contradictory worlds of conspicuous consumption and urban artifact. The work is at once melancholic, excessive and exuberant, poised somewhere between celebration and regret.

The artist has held solo exhibitions at the Dallas Contemporary, Dallas; the Bass Museum of Art, Miami; the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, UK; El Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, San Juan, Puerto Rico and the CAM, St. Louis. His work has also been exhibited in group shows at the MCA, Chicago; the Marta Herford Museum, Herford, Germany; the Museum Het Domein, Sittard, the Netherlands; the MCA, San Diego; El Museo del Barrio, New York and El Centro Atlantico de Arte Moderno (CAAM), Canary Islands.

Carlos Rolón/Dzine’s work is included in numerous public collections, including the Bass Museum of Art, Miami; the Brooklyn Museum, New York; the City of Chicago Public Art Collection; El Museo del Barrio, New York; the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico; the Museum Het Domein, Sittard, the Netherlands; the MCA, San Diego; the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City and the Pinchuk Art Centre, Kiev, Ukraine.
